The problem

You deliver an Excel automation that reads files or an API and builds a report. Weeks later the client asks for a change: a new rule, another column, a different endpoint. You edit the macro, and there is no cheap way to confirm that everything else still produces the same results. So you check a few cells by eye and hope.

How it is designed to work

  1. 01 · Input

    Files or an API

    CSV, JSON and .xlsx values, or API responses fetched from PowerShell with timeouts, bounded retries and structured logs.

  2. 02 · Contract

    Checked before anything is written

    Expected columns and types, with empty, zero and missing values told apart. A broken input stops the run.

  3. 03 · Compare

    Against approved outputs

    The macro runs on a copy of the workbook in local Excel. Its results are compared with golden files, using numeric tolerances per column.

  4. 04 · Report

    Differences you can show

    Markdown for people, JSON for machines, and a stable exit code. New golden files are approved explicitly, never overwritten silently.

Four demo scenarios

The kit ships with a synthetic demo workbook (invented sales data) that walks through each scenario.

  1. Scenario 1

    An input column changes

    A column is renamed or a required value is empty. The run stops with a clear contract error before any output is written.

  2. Scenario 2

    The API misbehaves

    Timeout, rate limit or invalid JSON. Bounded retries where they make sense, an explicit failure where they don't, and no partial output.

  3. Scenario 3

    A macro is modified

    The changed macro runs on the test input and its output is compared with the approved result: zero differences, or a list of cells with expected value, actual value and delta.

  4. Scenario 4

    A new version is delivered

    The VBA is exported to text with an environment manifest and checksums. Import, release packaging and a tested recovery procedure arrive in v1.

Requirements: Windows 10/11 · PowerShell 7.4+ · Excel desktop for Windows (Microsoft 365 or a perpetual version) to run macros and export VBA. Only the Excel versions listed as tested at release are supported. Checks that do not need Excel run on any OS with PowerShell 7.4+.

02 · Service Done for you

Custom Excel report automation

A fixed-scope service for recurring Excel reports built from files or a read-only API. Each delivery includes the workbook with its VBA as text, a data contract, acceptance tests you can re-run, a run log and a setup and recovery guide.

Written process only, no calls. Scope, environment and acceptance criteria are agreed in writing before work starts.
